Description
This set of Briefing Notes explains the essential components and function of any organization and how it stays relevant in an, ever changing, environment.
There are a number of fundamental areas of knowledge that a manager needs to achieve maximum effectiveness. Prominent among these is an understanding of the purpose, structure and function of organizations. At first, it might seem, somewhat, removed from the day-to-day routine of managing. But, this is not the case. There are a set of principles that underpin every organizational endeavour. Interpreted into practice, these principles form the basis of a management model, which can be applied to any organizational situation, irrespective of size, structure, activities or required outcomes.
It means, literally, any organization; large corporations, internal divisions and departments, retail stores, the fire department, sports and social clubs, government departments, ad hoc committees, project teams and so on. The management model’s applications were once, imaginatively, described as, ‘From an Ice-cream Parlor to ICI’!
Whenever and wherever, the components that define an organization are present, organizational principles and the resulting management model apply. The model provides a generic formula for establishing and managing any organization. It, also, serves as a reference ‘touchstone’, which managers can, regularly, re-visit to find answers to organizational issues.
These Briefing Notes, both, define the principles and describe the management model, which can lead any manager to ‘Understanding Organizations’.
